About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 29 September 2026Avant-Port is the oldest part of the combined Port de Granville in the Manche department of Normandy – a tidal drying harbour (port d'échouage) located right in the town of Granville at the entrance to the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and close to the Chausey archipelago. Together with a wet basin (bassin à flot) and the newer Port de Hérel, it forms the overall Granville port complex.
According to the sources, the harbour can accommodate vessels up to 18 metres in beam, 125 metres in length and 6,000 tonnes gross tonnage, and it has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world – up to 11.60 metres at a spring tide coefficient of 100. Within Avant-Port itself, the sources report 197 drying berths (échouage), where boats settle on the bottom at low tide.
Granville is known for its old upper town on the Pointe du Roc and its position as a natural starting point for sailing in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and to the Chausey archipelago, which lies within reach of the harbour.
