About the harbour

Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 29 September 2026

Cais do Chegado is a small, historic quay on the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, located in the municipality of Murtosa, at the southernmost point of the Murtosa parish. From here you can see the old mouth of the Rio Vouga river, known as "Rio Velho", which was diverted when the "Rio Novo do Príncipe" was opened in 1815. Before the nearby fishing harbour of Cova do Chegado was built, just a few hundred metres away, this spot served as a mooring point for many boats, whose catch and gear were handled from handmade pile-built platforms (trapiches palafíticos). The site lies adjacent to the settlement of Outeiro da Maceda, popularly known as Gafanha Baixa.
