About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 29 September 2026Castle Harbour, also known as Portumna (New) Harbour, is a public marina on Lough Derg along the Shannon Navigation, located on the lake's northern shore beside Castle Avenue in Portumna, County Galway – right next to Portumna Castle and the forest park. The harbour is managed by Waterways Ireland.
The harbour has undergone extensive renovation, with mooring capacity doubled, berths upgraded, the quay area re-paved, and new cut-stone walls installed. Following the works, the harbour reopened to boats in 2016.
Onsite you'll find toilets, showers, a pump-out facility and shore power at the berths. Drinking water is available at the harbour, and access to the showers and electric hook-up requires a Waterways Ireland card, purchasable at the Supervalu in Portumna. The harbour also serves as a launch point/slipway for boats and kayaks, and overnight motorhome parking is available for a fee.
Just a short walk away you'll find Portumna Castle with its gardens, along with Portumna Forest Park, offering waymarked trails and abundant wildlife including fallow deer and red squirrels. The town of Portumna itself is within walking distance, with shops, pubs and restaurants. Berth here and you're perfectly placed to enjoy both history and nature in one stop.
