About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 29 September 2026Céibh an tSrutháin (Sruthán Pier) is the main pier in Carraroe (An Cheathrú Rua), located on the west side of Casla Bay on the northern shore of Galway Bay in Connemara, County Galway – about twenty nautical miles west of Galway Docks. The pier is managed by Galway County Council, which oversees a total of 244 piers, harbours and landing places along the county's coastline.
The site is a drying quay in a remote setting, with good anchorage off the pier head and visitor moorings available. The pier is home to the traditional Galway Hookers – the black-hulled, red-sailed wooden boats including the Báid Mhóra, Gleoiteog, Leathbhád and Púcán classes – and hosts the annual Féile an tSrutháin sailing regatta, where these historic boats race against one another.
Carraroe is a Gaeltacht fishing village and a local hub of services for South Connemara, with a living tradition of boatbuilding and sailing. Plans have long existed for a maritime and cultural heritage centre at the pier, including boat storage, a display area and a café, though the project has yet to be built.
