Connacht Harbour

Connacht Harbour (also spelled Connaught Harbour) is a public harbour on the Shannon Navigation in Portumna, County Galway, reached via the River Shannon beside Bridge Road, on the eastern side of the town, close to where the River Shannon meets Lough Derg. The harbour underwent a major redevelopment in 2024 for €2.8m as part of Shannon Tourism Masterplan, delivering a significant expansion of the number of mooring berths in the harbour for public use.

The harbour now includes a new eight-berth marina at Connaught Harbour, incorporating a boat pump-out with new car parking area, and further quay wall berthing for 22 boats along with car parking and a civic area... at the bridge yard end of Connaught Harbour. Among the new features are additional parking facilities, including EV chargers.

The harbour offers toilets, showers, a pump out and shore power. There is also the addition of canoe steps for access to the Lough Derg Blueway; additional onshore facilities such as seating and picnic areas.

From the harbour, a new cycle and walking trail linking Connaught Harbour to Portumna town and Lough Derg Blueway now continues as the first phase of the extension of Lough Derg Blueway, connecting Connaught Harbour to Castle Harbour. The town is popular with golfers, boaters and anglers, and Portumna Castle, a fine example of early 17th century Irish architecture with beautiful surrounding gardens, is within walking distance.
