About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 30 September 2026Coosan Point is a public mooring area on the eastern shore of Lough Ree, just north of Athlone in County Westmeath. The site sits on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides and forms part of the Shannon Navigation, managed by Waterways Ireland.
Waterways Ireland has installed floating pontoons at Coosan Point, and local authorities have upgraded the land side of the site, turning it into a well-developed public mooring area. The location is also included in Waterways Ireland's network of service points along the Shannon Navigation.
At Coosan Point you'll find a public slipway directly opposite the moorings. Public car parking is available, and a children's playground sits by the shore. Just beside the berths is the Lough Ree Inn, a lakeside restaurant and bar with views across the water.
Around Coosan Point you can enjoy shoreline walks, and just off the point lies Hare Island, one of the nearest islands on Lough Ree. The spot is popular with locals and visitors over the summer, and it hosts the Athlone Boat Club's annual rowing regatta. Tie up at Coosan Point and take a walk along the shore before settling in for a bite to eat by the water.
