About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 30 September 2026Dromaan Harbour is a small public harbour on the western shore of Lough Derg in County Clare, owned by Clare County Council and located close to the village of Whitegate. The site has a rich history tied to Famine-era emigration and the Scariff Martyrs, who were captured here in 1920.
The harbour is very sheltered and peaceful, with plenty of mooring space for larger boats coming in from Lough Derg. The slipway, however, is for small craft only, as access from the slipway into the main harbour is restricted to boats no wider than 2 metres.
The harbour has a service block with toilets, and a new 3-unit service block with an accompanying tank has been installed as part of an upgrade carried out in partnership between Waterways Ireland and the local county councils. Hot showers require a Waterways Ireland card.
It's a long walk to the pub in Whitegate, while the historic Williamstown Quay and a well-preserved lime kiln lie nearby. Head for Dromaan if you're looking for a truly peaceful and scenic corner of Lough Derg.
