About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 29 September 2026Storholmen – also known as Kanonön ("the Cannon Island") – is a former coastal artillery installation at the approach to Sundsvall, just off Spikarna on Alnö. This small, scenic island has a pleasant guest harbour and several cabins for hire, and today it is a popular destination for both sailors and day visitors.
The guest harbour itself has a depth of around 2 metres throughout. Innermost there are 4 berths with Y-boom moorings, and boats can also moor alongside the whole quay or on the pier.
On the island you'll find a grill/barbecue spot where visitors can gather around the fire on the rocks, as well as a cosy pub that often has surprises in store.
Within walking distance of the quay lies a fascinating history: the island served as a fortress from 1954 to 1996, and when the armed forces withdrew, three large cannons were left behind along with a rock cavern of about 5,000 m² containing 1,200 metres of tunnels spread across the island. Marked hiking trails wind through varied nature of rocky terrain and forest, and every summer the island hosts Storholmendagen, when the rock cavern opens to visitors with guided tours and displays of military artefacts. Tie up at the quay and explore this striking piece of Sundsvall's coastal defence history.
