About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 29 September 2026Porto Austriaco (also known as Porto Asburgico) in Angera is a small historic municipal harbour on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore, facing the island of Isolino Partegora. The harbour was built in 1819 during Habsburg rule for trade purposes and to allow the early steamships to dock, and its distinctive structure features massive granite walls. The harbour is one of the stops on the town's cultural heritage trail, the "Museo Diffuso".
The entrance to the harbour is narrow and the bottom is shallow and mostly sandy, while manoeuvring space inside is good. Inside the basin there are several small landing slipways for smaller boats as well as a quayside pontoon offering a few berths for temporary mooring. Berths are allocated through a public tender by the local lake authority responsible for Lake Maggiore, Comabbio, Monate and Varese.
Outside the basin there is a convenient launching slipway for putting boats in and out of the water.
The harbour is within walking distance of Angera's historic centre around Piazza Garibaldi, with Palazzo Borromeo and views of the medieval Rocca Borromeo castle on the hill above. In town you'll find several restaurants and pizzerias, ice-cream parlours and a wine bar, all within a short walk of the waterfront. Take a stroll along the old harbour wall and enjoy the view of this historic port with the castle and the island of Isolino Partegora as a backdrop.
