About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 29 September 2026Cais da Régua is a historic river quay in Peso da Régua, at the heart of the Alto Douro Wine Region. The quay was originally built in the 18th century for loading and unloading Port wine, and the traditional Port wine boats (barcos rabelos) once sailed from here carrying cargo to Vila Nova de Gaia.
Today the quay mainly serves as the departure and arrival point for river cruises and boat trips on the Douro River, with tourist boats docking here daily as visitors explore the region. The quay offers views over the river and the surrounding vine-covered hills.
A stroll along the quay is a popular way to spend an evening or get some exercise while taking in views of the Douro and its steep vineyards. The Museu do Douro lies just a few hundred metres away, housing a shop, a restaurant and a wine bar overlooking the river. The town itself offers restaurants serving traditional Portuguese food, and from the quay you can also continue on to charming riverside towns such as Pinhão.
