About the harbour
Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 29 September 2026Skjern Bådehavn is a small, cosy boat harbour in Skjern in western Jutland, situated in the remains of the Skjern River's old main course close to the town of Skjern. The harbour resembles a small lake with almost no through-flowing water, yet with good access to the river, and today it is mainly used by canoeists and kayakers. Until 1850 the harbour lay close to Skjern and was then used as a port from which boats sailed up and down the river; remains of medieval Skjern can still be seen, along with exposed stone paving from the old Kongevejsbro bridge northeast of the harbour. You reach the harbour via Petersmindevej.
On site there are tables, benches and a barbecue area, making it a popular local outing destination. There is also a small information display describing the many crossings and bridges that have stood in the area since medieval times.
Right by the harbour's car park you'll find Kong Hans' Bro – Denmark's longest wooden suspension bridge, built in 2003 as part of the restoration of the Skjern River system. At the bridge stands a memorial stone for King Hans, who fell into the water here in 1513 and later died from the pneumonia he contracted. From the middle of the bridges you can watch the enormous volumes of water flowing through the Skjern River valley, and the area is also home to the two cable ferries Rørhønen and Blishønen. Stop by and experience the history and nature around Skjern Bådehavn.
