About the harbour

Automatically summarised text: Automatically summarisedvia web search · 28 September 2026

Birkholm is a small Danish island in the South Funen Archipelago, located between Tåsinge and Ærø, and part of Ærø Municipality. The island covers only about 0.9 km² and has just a handful of permanent residents. There is no car ferry – most visitors reach the island by the Birkholmposten mail boat from Marstal, while sailors can berth their own boats in the small marina, which according to local sources has room for around 40 boats. The harbour also has shelters and a tent pitch for visitors who wish to stay overnight on land.

The harbour is small and simple, which is part of its charm. There is a toilet at the harbour, and you can barbecue right at the harbour area – just remember to bring your own firewood. Drinking water and a shower, however, are not available right by the boats but can be found at the village hall about 500 metres from the harbour. In summer there is also a small kiosk there selling ice cream and sweets. The island has no restaurants, grocery shop or playground.

Take a walk on the flat, car-free island – it is only about one and a half kilometres across – and discover rich birdlife, overgrown meadows and a well-preserved village that still reflects Birkholm's history as an agricultural and fishing community. Just a few metres from the harbour lies a bathing beach, perfect for a swim after your sail.
